Mental Health Department
The Mental Health Service is responsible for the assessment, treatment, and ongoing support of patients experiencing a wide range of mental health conditions. Working in close collaboration with other mental health professionals, the service provides comprehensive care aimed at helping patients understand their conditions, identify underlying causes, and explore appropriate treatment options. Clinical psychologists rely on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) as a primary reference for evaluating patient symptoms and behaviors. During consultations, they explore new symptoms or behavioral changes, especially in first-time sessions, and provide a safe space for patients to express their concerns, share progress, and discuss setbacks. Treatment involves the application of evidence-based psychological therapies, with advice tailored to daily life challenges. After each session, psychologists maintain detailed clinical records and use diagnostic criteria to guide case management. Services include adult psychological consultations involving clinical assessments, therapy, psychometric evaluations, and follow-up care for individuals requiring psychological support—such as those living with HIV/AIDS, trauma survivors, and patients experiencing emotional distress regardless of whether they require medical referral. Child psychological consultations are also provided, encompassing clinical assessment, therapeutic intervention, psychometric testing, and case monitoring. The service also evaluates therapy outcomes, monitors mental health cases admitted to clinical and surgical wards, and conducts outreach and prevention activities in schools within the hospital's catchment area. Additionally, the team contributes to reintegration programs for patients with chronic mental illness, participates in medical ward rounds, leads psych educational group sessions, supports health education initiatives, supervises mental health services at affiliated health centers, and ensures systematic documentation and registration of all mental health consultations.
