Background and Establishment

Nyarugenge District Hospital is a modern public healthcare facility with a capacity of 120 beds. It was officially launched by the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Kingdom of Belgium through the Ubuzima Burambye Program and Nyarugenge District.

The hospital was built to address the need for accessible healthcare services in Nyarugenge District, particularly for people who previously had to travel long distances to access healthcare services at other district hospitals within Kigali.

Construction commenced on January 14, 2018, and Phase I was completed on July 22, 2020, under a joint venture between the Chinese Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and Horizon Construction Ltd. The architectural design was developed by MASS Design Group, incorporating compact, two- to three-story buildings that reflect high standards and innovative design, setting a benchmark for district hospitals in Rwanda.

Phase I included the construction and equipping of 120 beds and has been operational since October 2020. Notably, it served as a COVID-19 treatment center from January 8, 2021, to November 1, 2021.
