Patients rights and responsibilities
People of all genders, ages, religions, cultural beliefs or disabilities are similarly allowed to get health care services to help them maintain worthy well-being. It is with that regard that Nyarugenge District Hospital would like to remind every patient of their rights and that these rights can’t be taken away from them
Health care rights
- patients have full rights to health care services whenever they need
- Patients have full rights to the best possible quality of services whether preventive, rehabilitative or curative.
- Patients have full rights to a variety of health care services including referral when necessary.
Privacy rights
- Patients have full rights to be privately consulted, from from anybody else’s reach, whether seen or heard
- Patients have full rights to every single information related to their medical situations and its confidentiality
Access to information
- Patients are fully entitled to knowing who is treating them and their qualifications
- Patients have full rights to information on their conditions, the diagnosis, prognosis, treatment, dangers and alternatives.
- Patients are fully entitled to knowing the names of the medications recommended, their actions and side-effects
Choices
- Patients are fully entitled to contributing to the decision-making regarding their care, treatment, and medications, as well as consenting care.
- Patients are fully entitled to refusing any care, treatment, and medications and be informed about the consequences
- Patients are fully entitled to second opinions
Respect
- Patients are fully entitled to being treated with respect and their personal opinions, religious and cultural beliefs to be respected
- Patients are entitled to freedom against any sort of discrimination, irritation or any risk against their personal safety
- Patients are entitled to being treated in a language they understand
Raise a Complaint
- Patients are free to complain about any aspect of their care and treatment without fear of accusation
- Patients have full rights to prompt any action on their complaints and a report back on actions taken.
With all these rights, patients are reminded of their responsibilities too
- patients are responsible for taking care of their own health
- patients are responsible to the proper access and use the health system without abusing it
- patients are responsible for respecting the rights of health providers and other patients
- patients are responsible for providing health care providers with the required information about their health state
- patients are responsible to follow all instructions and follow the treatments prescribed
- patients are responsible for ensuring that they have the means to pay for all health care services they are offered
